Afraid it's more religious than you think, maybe you should have read the article in the ST re the Muslim Brotherhood and the attack on a Christian Church, it gave an insight into why Egypt was heading for trouble.

Regrettably yet again a narrow, trivial, idiotic leftie view.
Little to do with class, the demonstrators are a broad cross section fighting tyranny and economic mismanagement.
Of course the Islamists will exploit the situation.
Amuses me - why haven't the namby pamby Arab loving lefties been more vociferous about the Fascist tyrannies of Jordan, Syria, Egypt. Saudi Arabia et al?
Hardly a murmer until now.

More Bread Riots in a country that lacks major Oil or other cash crop exports and which relies on International Labour demand to keep its people employed. Instead they have rapid inflation and unemployment as Overseas Jobs dry up.

Its also another example of the US concerned only with saving itself, letting the Hot Money roll of the QE Printing Presses, irrespective of the results of its policies anywhere else, even major long term US allies!

So far the Egyptian riots appear leaderless and rudderless but this can change. The US will want to prop this regime up though as any incoming government will be far less Israeli friendly than the current.

To early to really read it so far, but it could be a sign that Americas grip over its regional puppets is beginning to slip.

Actually, it's News.
At least it's rolling on all the TV News channels now and has been  for the last 48 hours.
Also, it's headline News in all the dailies.
Why is Randombanter bucking the trend?
Weird, that.

I started another thread here because I felt it's a news issue rather than one solely about religion. Religion is an issue, obviously (and much more so than in Tunisia), but as noted on C4 News yesterday the Muslim Brotherhood are conspicious in their absence on the streets. Some people will big up the role of the Islamists for their own ends, but on the whole this is a popular working class led revolt demanding jobs, job security, food, an end to austerity, and end to dictatorship, and an end to government corruption. Of course it has middle class support, but the bosses of companies and the power brokers in the region have been more than happy with dictatorship, cuts, and corruption as they, the ruling class, exploit the people and maximise profits. The role of the USA is blatantly exposed. They talk about "democracy" yet back dictatorship right across the region to secure markets and maintain control.

The next few days will be crucial. The Police have melted away and now Government buildings and State TV are guarded by the army. However, as we have seen many many times before, when push comes to shove the army will often switch sides. Indeed the demonstartors see the police as their enemy, and the army as their friend. It will take a huge demonstration, but crowds are already gathering and Mubarak teeters on the edge.

I just hope the Egypt situation is resolved quickly -- otherwise lots of things will be getting more expensive -- especially oil

As much as Nic and Martel want to post their Islamist propaganda.... this is a news discussion. This topic belongs firmly in the news section.

Latest developments - crowds again gathering in all the mojor cities (Cairo, Suez, Alexandria). The army are protscting state buildings, but my money says they will not remain loyal to Mubarak.

Good point by Sampanviking that this is largely leaderless (and rudderless) but people are capable of organising themselves and thinking on their feet. There is a danger of who will fill any power vacuum, I believe the US grip on the region is slipping slightly. There's also a lesson for advocates of regime change. Popular revolutions tend to be far less bloody than the shambolic "shock and awe" chaos of US/uk military might. The people of Egypt are showing the way forward!!

Is it really? I see huge differences. The revolution in Egypt is far more secular. I'm not disputing that Islamists will attempt to fill a power vacuum, but people generally don't want a bigotted conservative government. The people of Iran have been fighting back too, remember.
