Have you heard of Douglas Bader?

In your top 5 of war films?  This one goes near the top.

Probably yes. I'm not a massive fan of the genre, so I've relatively little to compare it to. Saving Private Ryan was also very good, a was Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket.

'The Pianist' is the best ever war film.

How could I leave out Escape To Victory?

(Also the best football film ever.)

Reach for the Sky

Can I point out that I nominated Reach For The Sky which I cite as evidence for me not having forgotten him?

That aside I just stumbled across this:

Quick edit to add:

Untrue apparently. Never happened. Which is a shame but it is funny so I'll leave it here.

I wonder if the same generosity of the powers that be, the RAF, in allowing Bader to continue his service would have been extended to a similarly disabled ordinary airman in those class-ridden days?
Apart, a truly brave and extraordinaryly courageous man.
He even escaped from Colditz.

Granted. I was referring to groper's dismissive "never heard of it", which seemed to suggest that he had no interest in finding out.

I don't know about you, but, when somebody on a forum recommends something with which I'm not familiar, my first reaction is to look it up.

I am disturbed that Douglas Bader even had to be looked up.
I do hope that Stanford Tuck doesn't have to be looked up.

I didn't, of course, mean that I had needed to look up Douglas Bader, merely that I would recommend that course of action to anyone unfamiliar with the subject under discussion.
I'm old enough to remember seeing Kenneth More's portrayal in the cinema when the film was first released. :)

Of course not, certainly didn't mean you, oake  :)
I was speaking in general terms.
We have all this information literally at our fingertips and there is really no excuse for pleading ignorance of any reference in a post.
